FLASHBACK! The Red Bull Art of Motion Santorini 2012

The Red Bull Art of Motion, the biggest parkour and freerunning competition in the world, was born in 2007 and for the first time in its history was hosted in Greece at  2011 and then for a second year in the row 2012, on the beautiful island of Santorini. The contest is unlike anything before, and manages to capture the look of combining martial arts, parkour, the free-running and rhythmic gymnastics in an artistic way.

Santorini is the paradise of parkour, the exquisite traditional architecture offers a unique natural terrain. The breathtaking scenery and views of the Aegean add to a fantastic picture.

SANTORINI 2012 RACE - FLASHBACK:

For the second time in the history of Red Bull Art of Motion the world’s best freerunning / parkour athletes gathered on the magical island of Santorini, Greece to compete at the most epic freerunning course on the planet. Rooftops, domes and swimming pools on the edgy caldera of Firostefani became the ultimate playground and for more than 2 hours the 21 athletes gave their best in front of 2500 spectators that came to enjoy the event.

How freerunning / parkour works:

In the first phase of the competition, the athletes will have 80 seconds to cover a route-freestyle-overcoming obstacles in the most spectacular way, performing acrobatic moves of their choice. The twelve best, base score will qualify for the final. There they need to impress the four judges, who are internationally recognized athletes of parkour. The rating will depend on the creativity, execution, technical difficulty and flow of their movements.
